Ministering

Today's combined youth lesson was on ministering taught by our bishop. He asked for stories of how we have been ministered to and several adults and youth shared experiences. I raised my hand to say I didn't have an experience right then but that ministering to others in rarely convenient. It's never on our timetable or rarely fits into our schedule.

The bishop thanked me for my comment and said, "Well, I have an experience to share about that in your own family" and turned the time over to his wife Kathie to talk about how this past Thursday Kiersten had gone up to their home to get Hannah for a night run. Hannah was telling her how her mom was stressed about getting 23 costumes sewn for a dance recital in a few days.

Well, I went to pick up the girls around 9:30pm from their run and Kiersten had me take her home where she quickly changed, grabbed our sewing machine, and I dropped her off at Kathie's house. Kathie explained how that day she had prayed that Heavenly Father would please send someone, an angel to help with the load she was carrying.

Kiersten was that angel who stayed until 1am sewing costumes. Was it convenient for her? No. She'd been running all day and I think was exhausted and ready for bed. Was it when she wanted to be of service? No. For heaven's sake, it was almost 10pm when she arrived on their doorstep, sewing machine in hand.

That girl knows that true happiness lies in helping and ministering to those around us. She is truly an example to me of who I need to work at becoming, and I want to be more like her every day. How did I get so lucky to be her mom. When I grow up I want to be like Kiersten :)

Noah's ark

If my neighbors start building an ark, I'm going to get a little nervous. Kiersten made the comment that God might have promised to never flood the entire earth again, but he never said anything about flooding some of the earth.

The rains have been nonstop for over three weeks now. I'm not going to complain since we were scheduled for a drought. I haven't turned my sprinkler system on in about a month and my yard looks amazing . . . but so do the weeds, unfortunately.

I was talking with a couple of sister missionaries on Temple Square and telling them how green everything has been from all our rain. They are both from the east coast and kind of looked at each other when I said that. I guess it's not the lush green they are used to but for a desert state we'll take it.

Undefeated

Well as quickly as tennis began it seems to have come to an end. And I'm quite sad.

Erik told me the other day that when he joined the team his only goal was to make it out of doubles. He wanted to be playing singles. Never in his wildest dreams did he every imagine that he could go as far as he did.

Region was about a week ago. He was sitting on top playing in the number one spot for junior varsity. Since he was seeded high he only had to play two games. The first was against Grantsville, the same kid he had played three days previously and who gave him a run for his money. He won that match easily. It wasn't even comparable to Monday's game. His next opponent was Bear River and as they were warming up, the kid was asking Erik how old he was and a little surprised when Erik told him he was only a freshman.

Towards the end of their warm up, a group of girls sat down on the bleachers to watch and I was nervous for him. I prayed and hoped he wouldn't let a bunch of girls get to him.

They didn't.

He kept his cool and won.

That win against Bear River earned him first place in region singles for junior varsity.

I don't know. Do you think he was happy with his win?? He tells me that with that final win he didn't lost a match all season long. You're looking at Mr. Undefeated.

I'm excited to see what he'll do next year. Undoubtedly he'll probably be playing varsity. As I was talking to the coach's wife (Erik's coach is also Ashlyn's little league soccer coach), she was telling me how sad he was at the beginning of the season at the thought of losing some of his varsity players. He had some good seniors. What he wasn't anticipating was how good his little freshman team was. They surprised him at how well they did in the St. George tournament against some of the harder competition down there. Coach Jones has got a good group of boys to work with over the next couple of years.
